Bowel cancer: What is the FIT test?

A Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) test is a simple and effective way to screen for early signs of bowel cancer in a healthy person.

The Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) checks for the presence of small amounts of blood in your stool, which can be a sign of bowel cancer or polyps. Polyps are small growths in the bowel which can become cancerous over time if not removed. The FIT test is able to detect blood that is not visible to the naked eye, making it a highly sensitive screening tool.

The test is simple to perform and can be carried out in the comfort of your own home. A sampling stick is used to take one small poo sample. The stick is then placed into a sample bottle and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
